The road to federation - Presented By Sophie
Inquiry Question: What were the main events in your colony in the lead up to federation?
Hi my name is Sophie and today I’ll be talking to you about the road to federation. We have gone a long way since then, but none of that could have happened without federation. I bet you are wondering how federation happened in Victoria.
So let’s get started. Some of the key reasons for federation was to give Australia better defence. For at the time th Russians, Germany and France were colonising on small countries around Australia. They also wanted a strong government to sort out issues such as trade, economy and immigration, but many people said no because of the cost.
Deciding whether to go for federation or not was a tough one in Victoria for the money they made out of their lush green paddocks. If they said yes to federate people would come and go as they like and Victoria would be cut short of the money they made out of it.
If they said no Victoria would keep their money and paddocks, but they would also have problems. Problems they could not solve without a federated leader and no strong defence just a small army per colony.
So why did Victoria give up their paddocks and money for better defence and to solve problems.
Victoria was hesitant at first because they didn’t want women to vote. They also didn’t want federate because of the water the were fighting over with New South Wales and South Australia. They also didn’t want to because of the good resources they already had. For example their paddocks.
In Victoria they still had the majority yes vote because of the massive amount of people living there who did want to federate. So in 1901federation happened. Thankyou for listening
