The Dog Runner Passage |
Mr Todd's Passage
WALT: Mr. Todd's Rollercoaster
Part 1 I spot two gleaming bikes nestled like lost treasure; "let's take 'em!" I yell as we continue our sprint away from the warehouse. "It'll set off an alarm," Jamie panics. "We'll be too fast for the owners!" I reassure him. Jamie can be such a worrier sometimes. We slow down and cautiously creep towards the bikes. I jump on the rusted blue one, and Jamie carefully climbs on the newer, smaller brown one. Part 2 The alarm pierces my ear like a knife. It pushes me to pedal faster. Jamie, his gears kicking into action, speeds ahead. His panic has dissolved into pleasure as he feels the metal handlebars between his fingers. We're finally let off the leash. Part 3 In a flash, two beaming lights are on us. The alarm must've triggered a response. Chased like prey, we're being hunted by the beat-up vehicle. Suddenly, the rusty bonnet clips my wheel, and I'm forced to grip the handlebars tighter, fingertips away from falling. Jamie is beside me, fear burning in his eyes. They flicker as he notices a small dark path to my right. Part 4 My eyes follow his stare. Immediately, I understand his plan and nod in agreement. We shoot right, the car narrowly missing Jamie's back wheel. Our breath echoes off the towering walls of the alley. It seems to stretch as far as our eyes can see and dissolves into darkness. We dart into the black, hoping there's a way out. Part 5 I'm scared, I've never been so close to death before; my heart has left my chest. A flash of light shows the way, but we realise this isn't positive and turn around. The beaten-up car is crawling towards us, fitting perfectly like a glove down the narrow street. :"There's nowhere to go." a heavily accented man taunts. Part 6 Slowly, the owner of the voice gets out of the car, his eyes anger-wide, lips locked together. Jamie, my once confident and brave twin brother, cowers behind me and the bikes. I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck standing up as the man takes another murderous, intentional step towards us. The car's headlights spotlight his victims. I grip the handlebars, a rage starting to surge in my chest. Part 7 "Time to race!" I shout at Jamie. He knows what to do. My foot hits the pedal and we are away. The once dark alleyway, now lit brightly. A poison dart whistles past like a deadly bird, narrowly missing my arm. The alleyway seems to stretch further than I expected. All the air is falling out of my chest as I pray that there is a way out. The engine of the car roars behind us. "There's nowhere to go!" the man's voice continuing to taunt us. He is wrong. The alleyway, that allowed the car to fit snugly down it, morphs into a small path. Big enough for a bike but certainly not big enough for a car. The brakes screech in defeat as the chase comes to an end. I realise I've been holding my breath and my first inhale tastes like a cold glass of water. |
